Whether it is talking to people or just confidence in general there are three factors that can limit your confidence. Now, if you are able to overcome these three factors, then your confidence will go through the roof!
Before I share those three factors that are limiting your confidence, what if I told you that everyone is born with full confidence? You might be shocked right now, but that is the truth!
Let me give you an example: When a child is born, the child cries with full confidence in front of everyone. It doesn’t care what people are thinking, it doesn’t care if it should cry softly or loudly! It just goes in full swing because that’s all it knows to do.
Over time as an adult, if I was going to ask you, “Go out and cry as loud as you can in front of everyone”, would you really do it? Think about it! You wouldn’t do it. Right? There are so many thoughts that will go into your mind and you might probably think: ‘What will other people think about you?’ Right?
So the point here is, as a child to when you grew up something happened that made you less confident and hence, here are three factors that I am going to be telling you about right now!
1.BELIEF:
The first factor is ‘Belief’. Now what do I mean by this? Let me share one example! Now let’s say a child is crawling and it’s learning how to walk. It falls several times but does the child think “I am not good enough to walk, I will not walk anymore…” or does the child think “Oh, that person is laughing at me looking at me fall. I’m not going to try to walk again…” It doesn’t. Right? It just keeps doing it over and over again until it finally learns how to walk.
Now the same thing, when you feel you are not confident, what is it that goes on in your mind? There could be a lot of things but there are generally three big things that a lot of people go through:
- Self Doubt: I’m not good enough
- I don’t know what that person is going to think about me
- This is not something I can do
There is a quote by Henry Ford that says “Whether you think you can or you think you can’t; either ways you are right!” You see, that’s your belief. So how is this belief formed?
So this belief is formed through experiences. When we are growing, we are in different environments and people say ‘Don’t do this; it’s not good’, ‘Don’t do that; that’s not good’, ‘Don’t do this… you will get hurt!’ We have heard all these things when we are about to try something new and this is a belief.
So my encouragement to you is, when you are trying to do something and your thoughts are holding you back, that is your belief! Capture that thought, understand what that thought is and just do it anyway. That way you will actually overcome that belief and your confidence will start increasing.
2.SKILLS
Now what do I mean by ‘Skills’? Let me give you an example. When you first wanted to learn how to drive a car, whether it is manual or automatic, you were not so confident! You did not know whether you had to turn left or right or where you had to go? You had no confidence at all but then you learnt how to do it anyway! Right? Eventually you became very confident to drive a car.
So the same thing. If I was to ask you now, go on the stage and give a speech in front of 10,000 people, you would be like “Wait wait wait… I have never done this; What will people think? I don’t know… I am not so good on camera…” There are so many thoughts that go on right? It’s not because you are not confident but it’s because you don’t have the skills to give that speech.
But the good part here is when you identify the skill you’re missing, you can actually learn that skill and that’s when you get confidence. Remember this quote “Confidence comes from competence”.
Imagine yourself in the scenario at work when you do something so good and you have done it so many times, then you are very confident at this work. Right? Same thing in sales. Now this is a big one because a lot of people feel that they are not confident in sales because they’ve never done sales before and they don’t have the confidence to talk to people.
If you feel that sales is one of the aspects that you don’t know; you don’t know how to close a sale or you are not confident enough. No problem, it’s just a skill! You can always learn it.
3.NO ACTION:
The third factor that is limiting your confidence is ‘taking no action’. Now what do I mean by this is; there are so many people who read a lot of books, attend a lot of events, talk to a lot of people and learn everything and they also know everything but they still don’t have the confidence! Why? Because the knowledge that is there in their mind, it’s just there. They are not doing anything about it!
You have probably heard the saying “Knowledge Is Power”. I want to challenge that! Knowledge is not power, in fact “Applied Knowledge Is Power” What good is knowledge when you don’t take the action?
So from now on say ‘Applied Knowledge Is Power’ because that will allow you to take consistent action and when you take consistent action your confidence will come!
Now take me as an example. If you just take a look at my YouTube channel and just check all my videos which I made in the very beginning you will see some of the videos are really bad, the lighting is dull, I was not good on camera at all but I kept going and I made videos consistently and by doing it every single day, I became good and now I am able to talk without any fear and with complete confidence.
How did I get the confidence to look at the camera and talk? It’s because of consistency! Keep taking consistent action and you will see your confidence will start rising.
CONCLUSION
Just remember these three factors! Belief, Skills and No Action. These are the factors that are limiting your confidence. Just get rid of these, get rid of that limiting factor and you will see that your confidence will go through the roof. I would love to hear from you, so comment below and let me know how this has helped you improve your confidence.
